Founder & Laminitis- Equine Solutions
This is to help people and their horses
find the right nutritional support to
help them help their horses.
With founder, laminitis, insulin resistance (diabetes in horses).
Edema issues, belly and enlarged sheath on gelding.  I never thought to get a good pic of the sheath and belly edema streaking up towards his front elbows….lol….too busy trying to figure out how to get rid of it!  It was like holding a heavy football.

(Many stressful conditions can cause founder/laminitis episodes in horses.  Fever, pregnancy, injury, etc.  This article is in regards to IR. Flax oil and flax seed remains very antiinflammatory.)

DSC01886GeneralJuly

Products that I have used with success.
Most vets are not educated in using natural supplements for IR issues
so this is my “journey and experience”.

see articles at this page bottom about feeding – TIMOTHY PELLETS, only organic Beet Pulp if you choose to use BP other wise it is GMO, – Stabilized Rice Bran & – Stabilized ground Flax or soak or grind at time of feeding Flax seeds. Alfalfa pellets if organic are not GMO otherwise they are GMO, are low NSC’s (non-structured carbohydrates) whereas Alfalfa cubes are just like feeding alfalfa hay.  Very, very, very bad for horses that have IR issues, EPSM, etc.  I understand we all have to feed what we can find locally reasonably priced.  No corn, oats, wheat, barley, soy preferably not due to controversial issues with interfering with hormone receptors, but soy oil is anti inflammatory. Coconut oil good, Rice bran oil good, Flax oil good.

In 2009 when the price of flax seed went triple I cut it out of my feed mix and found that my two sister mares began to get stiff and not be able to walk comfortably so I added it back in for them.  Once the price went back to normal a year later or so, I added it back in for everyone!  I still had a 33 yo Arabian mare and 33 yo Arabian Stallion that as aged horses flax is great for keeping inflammation down so there are no issues with joints and such.  It’s great for ALL ages!

I also love feeding Orchard grass pellets, also low NSC’s (low carb).  I found Canola oil is very inflammatory when I tried switching to it from flax oil.  So NO Canola oil.  It caused within 3 days inflammation issues for my two sister mares.  I had been using vegetable oil or corn oil which work but not as great as flax oil, or ricebran oil, or coconut oil or soy oil.  My preference is flax oil, ricebran oil or coconut oil.

There are some specific products that can help you maintain your horse with IR and founder issues.

Due to Regulations now on drugs and natural supplements,
you will need to email me ?
for specific product recommendations.

I would like to also offer my feeding recommendations
that I use:  LOW Non-Structural CARBOHYDRATE – Cool Stance
for convience as well as my own special feed I make up (see below).
Find my recipe below. I also soaked my grass hay for my
two mares to reduce the sugar/carbs in it. My
gelding turned out to not need that done.

CoolStance copra is a unique horse feed because it has low Non Structural Carbohydrate (NSC), and yet has a high digestible energy content. CoolStance is packed with ‘cool’ energy from coconut oil and fibre from coconut meal. CoolStance copra is suitable for most horses and can be fed to maintain a natural state of gut health and insulin sensitivity, ie normal insulin metabolism.

CoolStance copra is made from the white part of the coconut, which has been dried, baked and ground. It is a totally natural product and is chemical and GMO free. http://www.stanceequine.com/product-coolstance-copra

This is OUR STORY and EXPERIENCE with Founder due to Insulin Resistance

dsc14krystal

My Personal Testimonial: I used ABC Pro Bi, A Digestive Supplement ABC PLUS, ABC HOOF,
on 3 of my 10 horses (ages 15, 16, 17 – 2 Arab full sister mares and one unrelated to the sisters, Arab gelding) that first foundered April and May of 2005 on straight alfalfa due
to being Insulin Resistant (they had signs of insulin resistance prior, much overweight, cresty necks), (KRYSTAL 2004)

dsc5general

And my gelding General, (had a very heavy huge sheath with edema) – very successfully
and highly recommend them. Also recommended to put out Free Choice
the ABC Free Choice Stress System which includes MOP A safe Detoxing supplement very important for acute laminitis/founder. They all eat lots of the A Mix, BVC Mix, some Ts Mix, some Detox, and lots of the Calcium:Phosphorous Mineral and a little of the Redmond Salt. (GENERAL 2004)

dsc15shamara

I did use BUTE on the two sisters beginning June 05. In Jan 24th 06 had the trimmer out and one sister Shamara, started having a founder attack, very hot feet, trimming was very difficult on both of them with hot feet, they were down to 1 bute daily so he suggested I put her on 2 – 2 times daily again which I started on the 30th in the evening. (SHAMARA 2004)

She Shamara went down on Feb 4th 2006 and by Sunday 5th she had been down for 14 hours. From there she got up and I found blood in her urine. Took her off the bute.

Started her on Penecillian, temp at 101.5. Continued
the Penecillian and added Genemician for 9 days. She finally got to the point where she didn’t get up at all for 7 days. I did start giving her Banamine once a day for pain which helped her to get up. She finally got up and then didn’t get up again for 8 days. We had her on 2 months of the Sulfer Antiobiotics before her UTI was finally gone. At one time in the first week of bloody urine it was so red and thick and bubbly,it was very scarry.

krystalstretched1615

Her sister Krystal remained on 1 bute daily, but she Sha Mara only got 1 banamine daily. March 20th was 7 wks of IR supplement on the gelding and the other sister mare Krystal. I took the UTI mare Sha Mara off the IR supplement at Gabrielle’s recommendation till it was all over. By March 25th 2006 the UTI was gone and Sha Mara was in to recovering slowly. I finally took the other sister Krystal off the 1 bute daily April 06. No other pain meds except for the occassional Bayer Aspirin 10 to 12 tabs, 2 to 3 times daily was ever used on the other mare and Banamine on the day of trimming to make sure she could stand well enough. (KRYSTAL 2006)

shamara10

The UTI mare Shamara only got Banamine occassionally for trimming. They are both not on any painmeds except for day of trimming with one dose of Banamine 3 hours before since end of April 06. When they re-foundered on the “other product” 2nd wk of April 2006 till last wk of April (so one year after the 1st founder), they got Banamine once daily to get them through a few times for trimming. The UTI sister did have a huge size of a plate open pressure wound down to the exposed hip bone from the 2005 founder and UTI fever that we have successfully healed with skin hair and muscle tissue again, but it took till now end of NOV 06. So it can be done! (not without scars though-we used Healing Tree Tea-Pro Spray miracleous product no sting) (SHAMARA 2006)

I didn’t start them on the first IR supplement that worked until Sept 2005 once I learned about it. The two full sister mares still had hot feet. My Arab Gelding had already
come out of it on his own and the only thing I changed in their diet was I took everyone
off the 1 cup a day of whole soaked oats mixed into their beet pulp feed mix (see below recipe).

But my Gelding still had a cresty neck and a huge sheath with edema so I felt
the IR supplement should be used on him to see if we could get some of the excess
weight off him and a wonderful surprise, his sheath has now gone down to a very
normal size and he is running around almost like he used too. He is still chubby some. Oct 06.
The two sister mares had lost lots of weight and were too thin, very ribby from the pain in their feet.

Since the first IR supplement I tried works with
the ABC product line whom I’ve been using since 1990 I felt it was my best option as I already
loved and agreed with the ABC product line. It took 7 to 8 wks after the first founder in 2005 to see my two girls (full Arab sisters) walking around again normally and even a little bit of trotting.
On June 5th, 2006 I switched to another product (EquineLegMagic which worked great for a friend’s horse who had developed ring bone in just a few months he was bucking and playing again but for IR founder issues not so much only a little) on the market highly recommended to save some $, and had them all 3 go backwards within 1 1/2 wks time to full blown founder again, very hot feet.

So I kept them on it for lack of anything else to give them, until
I recieved my new order of the original first IR supplement and Prebiotic June 26th 2006. I put
them all on 3 doses daily. My Gelding came out of it first in 6 wks and
my two sister mares came out of it finally about 10 to 12 wks. Takes longer the 2nd founder.  First founder only took 7-8 weeks.

generalboots1630

I cut my gelding back to 1 dose daily but he experienced some soreness
in one hoof after trimming a couple of times I decided to bring him up to 2 doses daily
and that is working beautifully. He is jumping up in the air, and running around pretty much like he used to.
He’s 19 years old Arab gelding. (GENERAL 2006)

krystle13boots

I also have my 2 Arab girls 16 & 17 now, on 2 doses daily and they
continue to straighten up on their front end and walk faster again. I hope to see
them back to where they were Sept 2005 before I tried a different product. I did as I was running out again of the first IR supplement switch to the ABC Cushings Supplement (for IR, Cushings, Obese) since it is an ABC product and the first one was also developed by ABC and was more of a complete feed type supplement and way expensive but effective. I found the ABC Cushings Supplement more affordable and just as effective as the 1st one.  (KRYSTAL 2006)

It’s also very important to find a “barefoot horse trimmer” who
can properly trim every 4 to 6 wks to relieve the pressure in the feet
while they are healing. I use ABC HOOF for growing healthy new hooves inside and out
and they wear Old Mac’s and or Cavallo’s 24/7 until their feet are good enough again to be barefoot.

dscn1413shamara

The severity of my two sister mares was massive. One Krystal had both her
coffin bones exposed for sometime, first one and then the other by the next trimming. Krystal actually at one point had both coffin bones exposed to the ground. My farrier used some iodine crystals and acetone mixed to chemically cartarize the blood vessels with these coffin bones exposed to the ground.  Very hot mixture.  After that we also poured some turpentine on the soles to help dry up the nerve endings and shrink them back up to reduce sensitivity.  Also Krystle’s front hooves with the coffin bones exposed the coffine bones and lamini looked like “Swiss Cheese” just full of holes.  (SHA MARA 2006)

dscn1410shamarakrystal

I kept boots on them and 7% idoine and
sugar or iodine and epsoms salts in some DAVIS Soaker Boots constantly
and then switched them to Old Macs’ and then Cavallo’s to keep bacteria
from getting into the cavities in their soles as the new soles were growing
and I managed through all this to keep any infection from getting started in
their feet – even with exposed coffin bones. The one Krystal with the exposed
coffin bones was the first one to begin walking all the way down her
250′ long pen and back a couple times a day and then even trotting some
before I did the big error of trying a different product that sent them backwards.
The other sister Shamara actually went down for almost 3 wks with a UTI that with lots
of tough work got her through and she even began to walk with her sister some. Shamara was eager to get down to her sister once her fever broke.   (SHAMARA 2006 after second founder and UTI fever) – (SHAMARA & KRYSTAL 2006 after 2nd founder)

I also soaked my local (orchard grass and pasture mix) grass hay that still had tiny bits of alfalfa in it, once per day that fed the two girls evening meal that day and then morning meal the next day in cold water in a big black garbage can. It was a pretty dark tea color when I poured it off
what was left after draining from the bottom several hours. I have finally for winter stopped soaking the hay with the freezing temps it doesn’t work for me outside.

My Gelding General, I never
did soak his hay and he has been good with that. I will probably resume
soaking 1st cutting hay when I get my first load of hay in June next year for the girls.
Depends on how my “gut feelings” are about it and how the two girls are doing then.

I did not resume soaking hay.  I found it wasn’t that necessary using the ABC Cushings -IR supplement and feeding low carb and grass hay with little to no alfalfa majority of the time.  We all have to get whatever hay we can find locally.  Feeding low carb means beet pulp and alfalfa pellets soaked with flax seed and some rice bran and some corn oil if desired or flax oil or cocount oil or rice bran oil, (there is actually enough oil in the flax seeds that comes out when soaked)  and add their supps.  Now since 2012 I use timothy pellets which are NON GMO.  Beet pulp and alfalfa pellets unless they say Organic are GMO.

They both did well after the 2nd founder and never foundered again, and Shamara’s knee went down to 1/2 or less of the calcification but then after a time the tendon began to contract.  Both passed on in their early 20’s, Krystal first the older sister as she rolled and twisted her gut, and then Shamara the younger sister just finally got old and weak and we needed to help her cross over.  My guess is the 2nd founder IR issues shortened their lifespans as most of my horses live into late 20’s and early 30’s.  Their supps that worked were the ABC Cushings Supp, ABC PLUS, Selenium/Vit E, Free Choice Stress System and ABC HOOF to help rebuild for a few months.  CLICK HERE to see products.

I hope my information and experience with my 3 Arab horses helps you.

Great Article by Pete Ramey — Horse Boots and Pads: A True Breakthrough In Healing
I highly recommend his books and videos!
Pete Ramey’s Website! Awesome!

My story with my 2 full sister mares (15 and 16) and 1 unrelated gelding 17:
I used to feed, 1/2 and 1/2 grass/alfalfa
hay, some grass pasture, and once a day 1 qt of dry cob (corn, oats, barley) and or
2 -1 at scoops hydrated beet pulp with cob and digestive supps. My 2 mares
with each successive year from about 2002 they were progressively
showing wt gain and then some cresty neck increasing as of 2004 and then
2005 Apr and May they foundered on 2 months of straight alfalfa
(which I wound up feeding each spring as my hay guy ran out of
his last season’s hay before cutting in June-I had been doing this for
years with no problems and normally feeding 1/2 and 1/2 to 11 horses
of all ages and gender). So, moral of that story is…Feeding alfalfa hay to horses is ok…until it’s NOT!

DSC3General
General – Arabian Gelding 17 y.o.

My gelding also I noticed since 2002 his sheath had been growing in size.
Later I found out this was edema. It was very heavy and uncomfortable for him but
not sore to be touched. It became the size of a foot ball! (GENERAL 2004)

My vet said more salt or steroids, could be kidney issues. She also cleaned out his sheath
which was a good thing to do but there was no benefit in regards to reducing any edema.

I put out more redmond salt free choice and white salt block and even added some
homeopathic for swelling which did seem to help. But a great side benefit

What I wasn’t expecting with the IR product was his sheath went down
to about 1/3 to 1/4 the size it had been for so long. Not perfect but so much
better. In a short time he was also running around his paddock again like he used
to play.

My 2 full sister mares had foundered much worse than he, but they too were walking
around their 250′ paddock 2 or 3 times a day again. I look forward to them
trotting around again in the future. (The two mares passed on in their early 20’s, a few years later, it’s my guess that the IR issues shortened their lifespans but they never foundered again).

The thing is “one” never worries too much about a “fat” horse, you just figure a little less food and more work. It’s the skinny, can’t get wt on horses that one usually worries about. But these are the signs of Insulin Resistance and it’s the food they are eating that exacerbates the problem and leads to eventual founder and laminitis issues (sore, warm or hot feet). It’s basically “diabetes” in horses. I only used bute until I was able to acquire the IR products 6 months later.

I actually had one full sister mare Shamara go down with a Urinary Tract Infection, fever and bloody urine, probably from using the bute for 6 months. It took 2 rounds of sulfer antiob. to get rid of it and about 2 months of intense care. She was very sick. The other full sister mare did fine on the bute, so you just never know. I recommend using a flax based liquid, devils claw, white willow bark etc. in place of bute for pain unless their feet are massively hot. and I recommend using the boots also. BUTELESS is a great product.

So Bottom Line – My 3 Horses are on the IR supplement, the Probi, The Free Choice Stress System
(important that they have the FC Stress System no matter which IR you use)

and “My Special Feed Mix” see below use ABC PLUS or PLUS Fortified
for your top dress/digestive supp. http://myfineequine.com/myfeedmix.htm

Selenium/Vit E, (be sure to check with
your local county extension office to find out if your area is high or low in selenium)
We also have a natural Vit E supplement if your area/hay is high in selenium)
Humic Shale Ore. are mixed into my special feed mix, and
GRASS HAY – (little as in 5% or less Alfalfa or NO Alfalfa is better, no clover same legume as alfalfa) No Molasses, no carrots, one carrot can be ok. Apples can be ok in small amts.

After about 5 years on the IR supplement (ABC Cushings Supplement) he started loosing more weight and becoming under weight, and after consulting with Mr. Helfter of ABC,
we determined he was no longer IR and I weaned him off the product. This is him in 2014 at 27. He still runs around barefoot! As you can see his weight is normal in the 2nd picture above, for 27 and his sheath is totally normal and has been since a year after he was put on the ABC Cushings Supp (magnesium, chromium, cinnamon supp) for IR issues and laminitis and the eventual disappearence of his belly and sheath edema was a bonus and a surprise as not even my vet realized it was due to the IR.  After 5 years we had to take him off the ABC Cushings supp for his IR as he began to lose weight and was indicating he no longer needed it.  We also stopped the Free choice minerals which he didn’t seem to care about anymore either.

Cat and Dog food – My Experience with Kirkland Brand and others – Allergies – What they mean.

When my 2 dogs started shaking their heads several times a day to shake their ears I decided to take them to my vet and find out what was in their ears?

Vet said it is “allergies” what are you feeding them?  Both their ears were red and irritated looking.  The little one you can see her hair is white on her legs.  Both of her front and hind feet and legs were “reddish” and she constantly for about 3 years was licking them constantly unless she was asleep.  The big dog was licking his exposed skin areas too.

DSC02401Dozier (1/2 Akita and Dobie or Rottie) had been doing it for going on 2 1/2 years and I tried detoxing and supplements to very little effect and the head shaking became worse and more frequent.  All day long.

Dozier is 11 in April 2015. Princess is 13 Feb 2015. (1/2 Rat Terrier and Toy Poodle) Both rescued as puppies.  Dozier at 8 weeks. Princess at 1 1/2 yrs.

DOZIER

And then my little dog started doing the same thing this last fall.  That was it, 2 dogs with the same issue there had to be something they were both getting that was causing the problem.

DSC02114

Even though the Kirkland Dog food has great ingredients listed on the label.  There has to be something in the ingredients that is not healthy.  Some suggest it’s where the “meat” is being sourced from. Kirkland won’t say on their bag’s where it’s produced nor where the ingredients are sourced from.

PRINCESS

I had been feeding Kirkland Dog and Cat food recommended to me by a local high end pet store owner, since the market crash of 2008 to save on shipping costs and to buy less expensive food but still safe food. Something changed in 2011 or 2012 as to where the ingredients were being sourced from or where being manufactured…..Or just the accumulation of toxins over the time they had been consuming this food.

So I immediately switched food.  I bought the Nature’s Domain Organic Dog food (green bag) at Costco.  In less than 30 days they both stopped shaking their ears and in less than 60 days the “reddish” skin disappeared on the little one’s (Princess) feet and legs.  All the constant licking stopped too. And everyone’s hair is back to silky smooth.

Also, does your dog smell?  That stinky wet dog smell that stays on your hand?  That is the “food” you are feeding, not your dog!  Dogs don’t smell and you don’t have to bathe them much at all, just to get the dirt out of their hair.  If you are bathing them to get rid of “so called doggie smell” it’s not your dog, it’s the food they are eating and it’s seeping out their pores.  Imagine what is going on inside them. Trust me.  Change their food to food that is actually good for their health and you will see within 30 days time they won’t smell anymore.  See my food recommendations below.

So even though the ingredients look good on the label, there can still be a problem of where the ingredients are being sourced from. Manufacturer’s are misleading us so we will buy their products because they don’t believe we know what is what . So beware.  You have to be buying from a manufacturer you believe has the best interests of healthy animals in their mission.   If you are seeing “allergy” symptoms then your pet’s immune system is being overtaxed by contaminants that are not healthy for them to be consuming. And an overtaxed immune system leads to life threating cancer and other diseases and illnesses due to a compromised immune system.  They don’t feel as good as they could either.  See for yourself, change their food to healthy food.  You will see within 30 days.

Normally 30 to 90 days is how long it takes for a body to detoxify itself when it is no longer consuming harmful substances.

Also 3 years ago, 4 of my 17 cats (4 of 5 litter mates) started loosing the hair on their underneath DSC02431and tender skin areas.  I tried with them detoxing, topical ointments, homeopathics, etc.  Thinking the food was good as listed ingredients were supposedly good on the label of the Kirkland Adult Cat food.

And they would lick as if their skin itched and I would find a tiny crusty or goopy spot here and there where it was irritated lesion like.  Their hair came back in and then happened again the next year. They were bald like this for several months the first time.

SHADOW and SWEETIE (below)

I had one of my My Fine Equine.com customers ask me if I knew what the cause of this was as it was happening to her as well but I didn’t at the time realize it was the “food”.  Shadow and Sweetie (litter mates 2 of the 4 with this symptom).DSC02134

After I changed food to Nature’s Domain for Cats, all their hair started growing back in and was all good in 30 days or so. And everyone is back to beautiful silky velvety soft smooth hair coats.  It’s so nice to see and feel them not having dry dull hair coats again.  Imagine what is going on in the inside, if the outside is not good. Feeding healthy food, they will need less food, poop less and maintain a healthier weight.  They tend to get too fat on bad food. Do the best you can picking food for your pets. If you see a problem don’t ignore it, change to the best you can afford to feed them. It will ultimately save you money and heartache.

I also had this happen back in 2002 when I noticed my 1/2 Akita-Boarder Collie Kwai had tumors growing up one of his legs.  He had been on Pedigree for all the years I had him. He passed on at 13.  3 years prior he and his kennel mate Mandy started eating grass and throwing up every day.  I had also last couple of years thinking I was doing a good thing for them in their later years, gave them the Dog Combo vaccines (7way) to help protect them and they had never had any vaccines all their healthy happy lives before.  They stared the throwing up the very summer after I gave

kwainoye02them their vaccines.

KWAI

All I managed to do was OVERTAX their immune system big time! Read Dr. Pitcarin’s book. Vaccines on top of Pedigree dog food.  Mandy passed on, but Kwai got surgery to remove the tumors, all were removed but some fibers on his shoulder.  Vet believed they would all be back in a month anyway.  I changed his food to ORGANIC and over 90 days he improved in health, stopped throwing up and got his energy back and there were no new tumors on his leg.  But the fiber on his shoulder they left continued to grow until it took his life over 6 months later. If they had removed it too as I insisted he may have lived another year or so.  But they didn’t believe that would happen.

KWAI010703

Below are some interesting facts about what you don’t want in your dog and cat foods.

As well as to be aware of “allergy” symptoms indicating your pet’s immune system is being overtaxed by “something” unknown lurking in the pet food.

There are several good foods available.  A new one I was just turned on to by a friend and previous Health Conscious Pet Store Owner, Precise Holistic Complete Dog Food.  You can find it on Amazon.  My 2 dogs like it, small kibbles.  I also have the Life’s Abundance which I never had a problem with.  Also beware of too high protein content for a while I was buying 36% protein Organic and Holistic expensive pet store cat food.  In 2008 I had 3 of my 19 cats get liver overload and didn’t realize it.  They stopped eating and inside ears turned yellow etc. I was able to save 1 our 8 yo Burmese female Baby.  Baby lived healthy and happy on healthy wet food 10% protein till she passed 5 years later of kidney failure.  We took her in when her owner (our friend’s grandmother) couldn’t take care of her anymore and passed away as a 5 year old.DSCN4574

BABY (Daddy’s Desk and Computer Kitty)

But my 2 brothers of a litter of 3 I didn’t catch in time to save them.  I used a combination of Vet anitobiotics and Homeopathic liquid spray Heel Liver and Kidney and another couple of things from my Homeopathic Vet.  The two brothers were 8 Tuffy and Travis, one was a twin of one (Teddy) that wasn’t affected.  So weird things can happen to some and not to all.  When it’s something “we” caused as we are the ones “care taking and feeding them all” the error really hurts beyond words.

kittens3t'sA

TUFFY, TEDDY & TRAVIS Brothers.  Abbey is their Mom not pictured here but a lovely long haired green eyed sable black with obvious Siamese due to the kittens.  I saw the “father kitty’ as he was leading his pregnant Abbey into eat where I put out food in the hay barn.  One day I was there and he was eating and then went out and brought her back in with him and sat back while she ate.  I was amazed and awed at this.  What a good provider and protector of his little family he was.

The next day when he brought her in I decided she was pregnant and didn’t want her having her kittens out side.  So I brought her in.  He hung around all summer and each day I saw him he looked at me like “where did you take my family I miss them”. It was hard but, I apologized and said I had them inside and they would have a loving home for the rest of their lives.  He finally disappeared that winter and I never saw him again.  He was a nice male.  The little Travis there looks like his Daddy Kitty.

Tuffy and Teddy together before Tuffy got sick. I’ll find a pic of Travis. These 2 were inseparable.Teddy still today looks for anyone who he can snuggle up to and lay on.

I hope my experiences here that I have shared are of some help to you and your beloved “furry family”.

IF YOU’RE AN EDUCATED PET OWNER, YOU KNOW THAT PET FOODS CAN CONTAIN MANY HARMFUL INGREDIENTS. YOU MAY HAVE BECOME VERY GOOD AT READING LABELS AND AVOIDING HARMFUL PRESERVATIVES LIKE ETHOXYQUIN OR BHT. BUT THERE’S STILL A PROBLEM

Tuffy and Teddy

Savvy marketing people are also aware of what you’re trying to avoid!

Pet food companies spend a lot of time and money researching what you’re buying and what you’re looking for on the internet. And they’ve taken this information and figured out ways to disguise the pet food ingredients you’re trying hard to avoid. Their clever marketing teams have figured out how to dress up the label to hide cheap, unwanted ingredients on the packaging.

Pet food industry insider, Maria Ringo, has developed the following list of the five ingredients that should never be on the label of your pet’s food, in any quantity. And at the end, she’ll talk about the ingredients from China that are easiest to hide.

Here are the top 5 ingredients you need to avoid. . .

Meals..

Pet food manufacturers claim that chicken meal is “just fresh chicken with all the water taken out” thus making it a supposedly super protein source. But meat meal, (and by this I mean meal made from any protein source), is made by boiling leftover animal by-products. These include meat or fish trimmings, carcasses, inedible parts and fetuses cooked for hours, at temperatures so high that “4D” animals (dead, dying, diseased or disabled) are allowable meal ingredients because even bacteria don’t survive the process. The resulting mixture is a heap of decomposed dust. Sure it has a high protein level, but so does shoe leather. Moreover, meat meal is missing many of the nutrients and amino acids (which are the building blocks of proteins), contained in real meats. And it’s illegal to use meals in human food, so if it’s not healthy for humans, it probably isn’t healthy for dogs and cats. Meals are used in pet foods to increase the protein content while keeping costs down. Avoid meals like the plague!

Wheat, Rye and Corn

Wheat and corn were the first to go on the naughty list years ago, so if the manufacturer is still adding these ingredients to your pet’s food he doesn’t care what you think. Further, to my knowledge wheat and corn are now mostly found only in highly processed, extruded products! Dogs get their protein from amino acids, and these old style protein replacements are missing many essential amino acids. This makes wheat,, rye and corn some of the least beneficial foods for your pet, especially if they’re in the top half of the ingredient list. Most often, only low quality of the parts of the plants are used, called middlings, bran, shorts and meal.

These are often the source of toxins including mycotoxins, which are a type of mold that can damage the liver and kidneys and are also very toxic carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

In addition to having very little nutritional value, corn especially can contribute to the many diseases linked to high sugar diets, including obesity, chronic inflammation, diabetes and cancer. Don’t be fooled: maize is corn, and maize gluten meal is derived from the making of corn syrup. Rye and triticale are both wheat. Rye also contains a compound called alkyl resorcinol, which at high levels can irritate the lining of the intestines and mouth. There are far better sources for the phytonutrients found in grains and there’s no excuse for including them in a quality pet food.

Usually rendered fats are identified as poultry but they could be from other farm animals.

Animal fats are rendered in the high heating process of making meal from meat packing waste, and then get further cooked and refined. Extreme processing makes these lipid heavy substances inherently unstable and therefore they go rancid very quickly. To be stored and used as pet food ingredients, they must contain heavy doses of chemical preservatives that are often not disclosed on the pet food label because they’re added by the renderer before delivery. So rendered fat is a Trojan horse for chemical preservatives including ethoxyquin! I don’t know which is worse, the chemicals or rancid fat, which is full of free radicals. Both wreak havoc on your dog’s immune system. And just like meat meals, rendered fats can’t be used for human food production.

No wonder! Some companies use synthetic antioxidants such as mixed tocopherols to reassure you that the fat is “naturally preserved” but these are still just chemicals. Moreover, the synthetic antioxidant used as a preservative gets all used up in the oxidation process after manufacturing, so it does your dog no good at all. So don’t be fooled into thinking that extra synthetic vitamin E might be beneficial. Due to the same problem with rancidity, be careful of vegetable oils too.

The canola, sunflower and other vegetable oils added to pet food must be preserved too, just the same as animal fats. Cottonseed oil may be labeled as vegetable oil. Cotton also happens to be one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world. Providing your pet with good quality fats including omega-3 fatty acids is easy: just feed fresh meats and foods that haven’t undergone high-heat processing, and provide your pet with spoonfuls of fish oil or other healthy sources of healthy fats.

“Some companies use synthetic antioxidants such as mixed tocopherols to reassure you that the fat is “naturally preserved but these are still just chemicals.”

Digest is often sprayed on top of pet food, especially cat food, to make it palatable”

Sometimes listed as natural flavor, digest is a cooked-down liquid of by-products of unspecified animals which can include 4D goats, pigs, horses, rats, road kill, and even euthanized cats and dogs from shelters.

None of the dead animals thrown into large vats and cooked in a mixture of acid and water need to be from USDA inspected facilities. They can come from anywhere. Digest is often sprayed on top of pet food, especially cat food, to make it palatable. If your dog’s food is full of wholesome meat and vegetables, she’ll love the taste, so there would be no need to make the food palatable. Besides the fact that animal digest is disgusting, maybe even immoral, what does it say about the quality of the product if it needs to be there in the first place?

Most pet owners know to avoid soy products. What they might not know is that so can be disguised as protein concentrate, vegetable broth, textured vegetable protein, or hydrolyzed vegetable protein. Soy is found in pet foods because it can boost protein content without the expense of meat.

But soy is also an incomplete protein with a well known ability to create food allergies in both humans and dogs. This is because soy has very high concentrations of phytoestrogens (enough to disrupt hormonal balance causing all kinds of mayhem) and anti-nutrients (natural toxins that inhibit enzymes needed for protein digestion). Soy has been linked to deadly bloat in dogs and promotes the formation of urinary stones.

Synthetic vitamins and minerals are also known as the premix in most pet foods. I’ve given entire lectures on the difference between synthetic nutrients and real food nutrients, because it is so vital to health. Unfortunately, synthetic ingredients are the most common items on the label that consumers overlook and they are an easy way for pet foods to contain harmful ingredients from China without having to disclose the country of origin.

Just as with the foods we eat, vitamins and minerals provide true benefits for us when they’re consumed in their native form, that is, when they are consumed in the foods that naturally contain them. Nutrients found in whole foods are highly complex structures that combine a variety of enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants, trace elements and many other known or undiscovered factors, all working together synergistically to enable the vitamin complex to do its job properly. Synthetic nutrients, on the other hand, are adulterated, isolated compounds completely lacking in all of the other vital components that are normally part of vitamin complexes in foods.

With prolonged exposure to one dimensional synthetics, the body’s supply of the other nutrients is depleted and a nutrient imbalance is created. The highly concentrated doses of synthetic vitamins used in pet foods containing premix hastens the development of nutrient imbalance in your pet, ultimately leading to poor health. A pet food containing premix does not contain enough real food to provide adequate nutrition without it.

There is a time and a place for vitamin supplementation, but it’s not in the daily diet we feed our animals their whole lives. This list looks pretty grim, especially that meal and digest stuff, but don’t despair. There are excellent foods out there from reputable companies and you can choose from baked, dehydrated or raw. Just keep reading those labels and stay one step ahead of the marketers.

Also something to keep in mind about household cleaners and such.

Exposure to household chemicals is another in thyroid issues.  The products I use to clean are Toxin-Free from our Forever Products Company EcoSense – Sol-u-mel stain, odor remover, Sol-u-Guard disinfectant, Tub & Tile Bathroom Cleaner, Clear Power glass cleaner, they all work as general cleaner and degreaser and vinegar.  (from a friend of mine) I think I may have mentioned to you that the Swifer/Clorox wet jet killed my cat.  The first and only time I used it and it killed my cat when he walked on the damp floor.  My friend has a Pomeranian.  Same thing happened with her dog.  They never made the connection until it killed my cat.  Household chemicals, even inhaling them, can cause the liver to become very toxic.

If you have HORSES and other EQUINES  (donkey, mule) I don’t recommend most DSCN3192bandit08commercial bagged feeds for the same reasons as above. Distillers grains, GMO Beet Pulp, Soy, Corn, Wheat, etc...Here’s my feed mix and what I feed mix horses.   BANDIT

Rare Virus Vesicular Stomatitis Now Spreading Rapidly

horsewithmysteryvirus2014Rare Virus Vesicular Stomatitis Now Spreading Rapidly
Keep your horses and your livestock safe.

Vesicular stomatitis (VS), a highly-contagious disease of horses and other livestock is spreading throughout Central Texas and Colorado.

VS is similar to Foot and Mouth disease in that clinical signs include major swelling; shedding of skin on the muzzle, tongue, teats and above the hooves; and severely painful oral blisters and sores. While seldom fatal, recovery is prolonged and affected animals may be infectious to other animals for as long as three weeks. Flies are thought to be involved in the transmission of this disease.

Texas Animal Health Commission has announced that outbreaks of VS have occurred in at least 21 different locations in eight Texas counties, 27 equines were affected, including 22 in Texas and five in Colorado. Concerns about this infection have resulted in the cancellation of several horse shows and some equine ranches have closed their facilities to outside horses until the current outbreak abates.

In Minnesota there are reports an outbreak of equine herpesvirus-1, or EHV-1. According to Dr. Paul Anderson from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, EHV-1 is a common virus in the horse population. What is a little unusual is this case is the number of horses with severe neurological damage, leaving horses unable to get up and walk. At least three horses have already had to be euthanized with four other horses, being tested after showing signs of the virus.

Myfineequine comment I do have the Herpes Virus Nosode with EHV-1 added. http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=54&products_id=286

Nosode info at http://myfineequine.com/nosodes.htm

ABC COMMENT:
It’s a good thing to avoid exposure to infected animals in these sorts of disease outbreaks. Unfortunately, in their haste to limit exposure by killing flies and avoiding other animals owners often fail to ask the question – “Why is my horse more susceptible to these diseases and what can I do to make my animals more resistant?”.

Consider this – the immune systems of our animals (and us too) are under daily attack by the myriad of GMO’s, insecticides, herbicides and other environmental toxins foisted upon us by the greedy biotech industry and complacent government regulator agencies.

Case in point is Monsanto’s RoundUp. The main ingredient, glyphosate, and the accompanying adjuvants are known to be toxic at levels far lower than the government’s safety standards. GMO’s and glyphosate are used on the majority of crops such as corn, soy, beets and alfalfa in this country. These crops are deficient in trace minerals and are toxic to the beneficial gut bacteria essential for health in any animal. The immune systems of animals fed these crops suffer from the effect of mineral depletion and intestinal damage and thus they are very much more susceptible to any virus or bacteria they are exposed to.

The bottom line: To have healthy animals you must limit feeding these toxic crops, you must provide balance minerals, and you must nourish the beneficial gut bacteria. The only sure way to do this is to feed Organic feeds or add a Glyphosate Remediation Product (G.R.P).

If you are concerned about the health of your animals, give us a call — We can help!

Dear Rescue Person,
I don’t remember who all rescues and who doesn’t here but likely most of you have a rescued animal in your care as part of your family.
Thank you for your interest in looking into this with me further.

Please read the whole thing…In my heart I believe this is something you will want to be a part of.   Like the movie, Field of Dreams. Build the Field and they will come.

I am on a MISSION that does include your MISSION. pawinhand

I am pouring my heart out here. All the clarity is below. I want to see if we can be one, on the same page UNIFIED in getting money for our rescues and being UNIFIED in our rescue efforts as a team.

This is a bit long….  (but I guarantee it’s worth the read)

But it’s my one shot to share this “VISION” with you.  I’m not asking you to do anything you don’t already do.

Treating animals with fairness, dignity and respect.  That is our hearts desire for all animals.  Love, family, shelter, food.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how they treat their animals.” Gandhi

Unifying everyone with the common goal to make sure there is always someone that can be reached and respond quickly when the need arises. Wild or Domestic.

Who ya gonna call? (not the Ghost Busters) business_lady_cellphone_talking_md_wht

That’s the big heart and stomach wrenching question facing everyone when a need arises.  And having to say, “I just don’t have a vacancy… and I don’t know who to call.”

We want that call to be to OurCPR.org

The web pages are what I started on way back when…lol….and no changes or improvements have been made.

Also I started out hoping for “donations”. Which is the slow, no go way to get this going.  The only way this works for all, is if all of us with a common goal Unite and participate.

Unified Participation.

kittens3t'sA

What is OurCpr.org’s purpose?

One Organization that links and unifies every individual, every animal rights organization, into one place to Contact so anyone can get help for an animal in need quickly at any time and anywhere.

                                                               Tuffy, Teddy, Travis (brothers)

One Organization that is in every community … linked as ONE.

One Organization that provides a much bigger VOICE when needed. One Organization that unifies all and leaves no individual alone in the endeavor of helping animals.

At no financial cost to any of us.

Rather we can all be enriched by banding together.

One Organization Center in every community, that provides “Free Classes” teaching/educating the youth and all interested ages, everything about animals and how to provide for them and communicate with them.

Helping all to understand them, appreciate them, protect them, respect them, leading to less abuse and neglect of them.

A loving home for every animal.

cantstopthinking

More qualified Service Animals available. The topics for “Classes” is unlimited.

I want to give away collars with ID and contact info and microchip and other giveaways that will enhance pet ownership for the youth. Spay and Neuter programs.

Are you beginning to get a little excited and
see the potential here with me?

Are you standing on your left ear so excited, like Melony here?

melonyearstanding

One Organization providing a platform for all who want to “teach” the youth about everything that animals are, what they have to say to us, how they say it if we know how to listen, how to administer health and healing and love.

We’ve all been focused on doing what we can on an individual basis, like little Islands struggling for courage, strength, money and participation of others, when what we need is a unification of people and efforts in all communities all across the country.

At least this is what I have longed for in my rescue efforts.

People as a whole have the tendency to sit back and “wait and see” if “you”  succeed before we decide to participate syndrome. Or, I’m just too tired and to stretched now to help you with your thing.

I am turning 60 this year and know that I have a limited number of years now to get this launched and functioning to making a humongous affect on “humanity through animals”.

My belief is that we as human beings can be better but only through providing better for animals and learning from them what they have to teach us as Humanity.

They are More Fair, More Forgiving, More Thoughtful, More Loyal….the list  DSC01912BoJulyshiningis long.

What virtures do you attribute to animals that you have experienced?

Virtue is moral excellence. A virtue is a positive trait or quality deemed to be morally good and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being.                                                                           Bo (rescued Paint Stallion)

My belief is that UNIFIED we can be more accessible and provide EDUCATION to all interested. Therefore opening up minds and hearts and getting more active volunteer participation from even those not able to have a pet or the opportunity to be exposed to a domestic or wild animal in a teaching environment. I can see

LOVE and ENTHUSIASM and INSPIRATION on the Horizon with this One Unifying Organization.

Can you see that with me, or do you think this is too lofty a vision for the

Mickey sister to Max rescued as a kitten.

Mickey sister to Max rescued as a kitten.

U.S.?

It’s not something that can be accomplished by one.  The more participants the more energetic, successful, penetrating, enriching and fun it will be.  I know there are many out there with more time and more money, more caring and giving and knowledge all looking for ways to give of themselves to animals. They just need a HOW and WHERE TO and WITH WHO because we are not little Islands….

As I’m writing and talking about this again out loud, I get really excited as I’m really passionate about animals and their plight at the hands of humanity in general, and then I get really scared that no one will help me do this….because you are already doing all you can time and money wise…etc…

So what does your involvement entail you ask?  How could I be of any Jan12#44TeddyTuffyhelp alone?

We all need the energy of other’s to help refill our batteries, other wise we do just run down. We are not Islands.

If you are on board and tired of reading you can respond to me at any point, or keep reading.                                                                              Tuffy and Teddy

Click Here Now To Email Me For $1 Membership Before The March 31st!

It’s ok if you miss the $1 deadline. It’s only $29 admin fee to open your Memership shopping account, which is what we paid.

Everyone benefits and especially our animals we try to do our best for benefit. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a barn, I’d love to have one for my horses.  Expensive to build.

I have a 1959 tractor that isn’t running again.  Needs a new starter for $300 that I don’t have extra.

I’d prefer one that doesn’t need constant repairs.  Fix one thing and another fails. I’d love a 4X4 one, with all the attachments I need and paid for in cash (no payments).

DSCN3178Our mini (Bandit) we rescued several years ago passed away at 27. I really miss him, so fun.  I’d love to have another or two. His shelter and run is empty.

But I’m down to 9 horses now along with 2 dogs and 16 cats, and need to just keep up with them with the money I have.

The amount I can count on seems to be getting smaller.  We all know what the hit on the economy has done to the horse market and supporting products as a result.

I have used the income from being the first person on the “web” in 1994 with exceptional healthy nutritionals for horses, dogs and cats, through my website Myfineequine.com.

My income is 1/3 of what it was prior to 2008. Not helping me grow in my ability to help and rescue.  I’m guessing your “donations” are down too.

Now on to how WE all can get “money” to move ourselves and this Organization forward regardless of National Economic conditions.

With your help, and with earnings through using our dollars to support a worthy company who pays us in “revenue sharing”,  it will give me the dollars I need to move this forward.

And will give you dollars you need as well. cashinwheelbarrow

We all VOTE with how we spend our $1’s as to who gets our support. I believe once OurCpr.org is out there and we are all using it in our unified efforts at protecting and providing love and homes to animals, the big Donators (Philanthropists) out there will come forward and donate of their own free will without being asked to do so.

Asking for donations is like asking for one of the “Sharks” Angel Investors to invest in something that doesn’t have any sales record yet. Isn’t a Business yet, beyond Hobby Status. Futile. DSCN3320CimmaronnFeb09

I personally don’t have any donators.  Just my hay grower for 20 years who continues to undercharge me.  And I feel guilty as in his mind he is “loosing money” he could get on those bales.  He is in business to earn his family’s living.     Cimmarron (Quarab)

HOW TO MAKE MONEY EVERY MONTH without having to do another fund raiser.

When you do fund raiser’s how many candles, or wall decor or tupperware or kitchen ware, etc. can your friends and supporters buy?  They would love to keep helping you but they follow your lead.  What if you introduce them to products we all have to buy but this way you and they are certain these are always GREEN SAFE Toxin Free Health Promoting, can trust what is on the label is in the product kinda products?  Daily use products that are purchased every month by all of us. That way you develop a monthly income and they get what they need and feel good about being able to help you help animals every month without digging into their pockets for extra stuff they likely don’t need.

If you do have “donators” give them this same proposal.  They get what they need and they will know how they are helping you get dollars you need.  You will be helping them too while they are helping you.

What kind of products you ask?  My favorites so far, ACCESS BAR (130 calories tastes like a delicate dessert) it’s a workout bar that lasts for 2 hours helping your body turn body fat in to fuel, great for horsey chores, and when we are done, we are still not hungry for dinner yet!  They have protein bars too and a Crave Blocker bar.

PEAK PERFORMANCE supplements, we are over 60 so use the Longevity Formula’s. We noticed by morning 7 that we had not been getting what we needed or what we were taking was not effective, wow the new energy level and reduced stiffness, I could finally bend my middle finger and my other’s tightly into my right palm!

We totally love the ECOSENSE home care products, dishwashing, glass cleaner, Disinfectant, Bathroom Cleaner, Stain Remover, 6X laundry detergent, fabric softner, etc.  We love the tooth polish and Mouth Rinse.  We love the Renew Body Wash.  We love the Sei Bella Hair care, the ProFlex20 Protein Shakes for breakfast with the FIBERWIZE both peach and orange flavors. We love the ProCare Pet Shampoo and treats too.

Renew Intensive Skin Therapy Lotion is by my sink. Affina Facial Cleanser + Toner, Body Satin Foot Lotion and Hand Creme and Sun Shades Lip Balm, Mineral Sunscreen and After Sun Hydrogel E.  I love the hot iron Prep Spray, there’s both deoderant and antipersperant/deoderant.  Sei Bella skin care and hair care and cosmetics.  So much more!

We are all only as effective as the time and money we each have to spend on these animals. PrincessDSCN2072

What if you were able to “buy back your time” and have more funds to spend? How would that make you feel?  How much joy and new inspiration to do more would that give you?

Princess

I personally won’t go down to the local humane society or kill pen because my heart bleeds too much and I would want to rescue every one of them and can’t. I just can’t bear it. And I commend all who do.  Their efforts are necessary.

I don’t buy an extra bag of dog and cat food to give them because I can’t afford to beyond feeding the ones that I have and on top of that I don’t want to buy “cheap” unhealthy food for them, that causes illness and allergies, because I can’t bring myself to do that.  I would have to give them the healthiest food I could find so they can heal and feel better.

My question is to you, “How Would you Do That?”, if you don’t have the extra funds?

The importance of Healthy Food – Allergies-Toxins hiding in Pet Food Ingredients, I wrote an article in my Blog that can be accessed from my MFE Newsletters. See the link at the bottom of this newsletter.

There is so much (is an understatement) that needs to be done..and all of us have to turn our eyes the other way, and live with the fact that our “hearts” aren’t able to turn away. I hear all this from many that I talk with.

I’m trying to make it real here….as real as it is in my heart as I know it is real in many of your hearts.

DSCN3963Dozier                     Dozier (1/2 Akita-?)

REALITY for some people is poverty and crime and lack of education and lack of opportunity where for other’s REALITY is a 6 foot fence around their estate and security cameras and a swim spa and a big indoor swimming pool for their kids and family and a housekeeper and concerns where to vacation and over how to pay less in taxes, where many don’t even earn enough to owe any taxes and everything in between.

Our REALITY is what we make it though. It happens by default from not making a choice, or which fork in the road you choose to take.  IF IT’S TO BE, IT’S UP TO ME.

I had this idea that took more and more form over 25 years.

I started on it in 2002 and then again 2009 and due to economics and feeling overwhelmed with what this could be and how I just one person could ever possibly push it forward into REALITY and not being able to make a push for donations.   I pushed it aside for later.

After all this time has flown by, I realize I don’t have another 25 years to work on getting this started.  And I feel ashamed and heart sick at the time lost for the animals and our youth that are now adults, and what a difference this Unifying Organization could have already made…..All in God’s Perfect Timing, right?

So, I’m putting out THE CALL TO ARMS, for help getting this OurCPR.org launched and functioning. DannyfacesDSCN4379

A Unifying Organization we can all be proud to be a part of. Not just my legacy but everyone who joins it with their own efforts. An Entity unto itself held up by all it’s participants.

DANNY (Arabian Stallion)

I’m not looking to ask for donations to help support my life style and animals I choose to rescue and bring home.  That is so short term, you have to ask and then you have to ask again and wait…..

It’s hard and such a chore and many people just don’t have the extra cash to give these days. Fund Raisers the same way, it’s constant hard work each time.

Forever Products = Forever Money (Income) = Forever HomesDSC01421

I am asking for participants who will buy things you already purchase from some other major company putting their products on the shelves….to buying them from a 29 yo GREEN 2.1 Billion Annually company with their own manufacturing facility in the US.  MADE IN AMERICA daily use products made by AMERICAN WORKERS.    Max and Teddy

Ellie, Callie and Maiya

Some industries thrive when the economy is down where other’s lose ground.  The companies that are in the essential supplies thrive, because unless you are homeless and camperless, you still need these products.

Will you look into this further now and join me, participate and help me do this now?  $1 Membership does expire March 18th Wednesday. I need your participation and energy to do this.  Alone isn’t working. We can all leave the legacy of OurCpr.org to the next generations and incase you didn’t know, your Forever Products businessis willable too. There’s also many tax advantages available to people who have a home business that aren’t available to other business types.Call me to talk 866-673-8747 or email me.

I have to start the process for you through my Membership Shopping Account and then the company will send you a private email to finish the process.

Email me your Name, Address, Phone #, and birthdate (they need to know you are at least 18).

It’s a simple little thing of buying the things you buy now from yourself.

Why be fragmented out there trying to do your best for animals and spending your dollars on big companies that don’t pay you anything back, when we could all be UNIFIED in our efforts and supporting each other in our one cause? Better lives for Animals and therefore Humans. DSCN4574

I’m also looking for software programmers who can build the contact manager and web presence.

There are two things here that need to happen, one doesn’t fly without the other one.

Baby

Maybe someday OurCpr.org can manufacture their own healthy food and supplements for animals, and other items to help fund it in an ongoing basis, but to begin with this 29 year old company is a 1.2 Billion per year manufacturing and distribution company and can handle/fulfill this kind of growth.

I know a wonderful Vet in NYC, that might help with our own OurCpr.org food and supps.  But this needs to be working and swinging.  He has been held up due to Manufacturing takes big bucks invested.

Just like your operations, mine require “income” to fund buying quality food, building shelters, providing care and maintenance, increasing facility would be awesome and hiring the right people to help, etc…

It hurts my heart beyond what words can express, to say “I don’t have the extra money”.  I am beyond sick of hearing myself have to say those words or think those thoughts and hear them in my head.  Because I’m stretched far as I can be, I pray I don’t see any stranded or in need animal in my path.  I don’t see that as a good thing.

In order to do better, on a grand scale which I know all of you believe is what really needs to BE, then we have to UNIFY.

Unified we are Exponentially more Effective and Strong and a much bigger VOICE and Helping Hand for Animals. DSCN3498

And we can train the youth on a grand scale which will ultimately make our ARMY so much bigger and so much more effective.

Ellie (filly) and Callie (grandma)

Imagine how many Petition Signatures that any one organization could get for their cause because we are all linked.  Imagine the pressure we could exert in every community as well as on a national level to get something done.

PLUS of course at the touch of the CALL BUTTON on anyone’s phone anywhere, Qualified HELP can be on it’s way.  There’s details to be worked out, and input needed, but those are all details that don’t matter without the funds to get this done.

All we have to do is get started.

I’m asking you to Join me, let’s use this 29 year old company to increase our “income” and as soon as I have the contact software available for use, I will launch OurCpr.org and put out the call for volunteers to be in the Contacts and then get a Toll Free Number and we can begin getting it out there for everyone to put in their cell phone contacts.

Imagine no more struggling for donations.

At the risk of being repeative….

It’s a simple little thing of buying the things you buy now from yourself.

Who do you want to continue to “support” with your dollars? MaxDSCN4439

Where you spend your dollar (whose product you buy) is your VOTE as to who will continue providing products and research and development for your benefit.

MAX  (brother to Mickey)

A giant company that is solely interested in their own profits or a smaller company, a Made in American with American employees company, that’s been  GREEN for the last 29 years doing 1.2 Billion Annually.

And in order to be in business this company pays it’s customers for their Loyalty with products, as well as income (revenue sharing), for being the “advertiser”.

From Manufacturer to Customer direct, leaving out all the many middle-men, distribution companies and warehouses, including not paying for TV time or radio time or advertising firms.

Is this making sense to you too?  cimmrfce4

Use your dollars to support a company you can trust to deliver the ingredients and quality you expect for the health of your family.

Toxin free, Eco Friendly, backed by science, health promoting.

Cimmarron (Quarab)

Now, I’m getting a little nervous throwing this out there again.

I have gone to bed tired and insecure, I have slept on it for 2 nights and gotten up each morning, feeling strong again and knowing I need to get this out there.

I alone have gotten nowhere alone.

Simple thing…where we can Band together to increase our incomes, to  better provide for our animals and do better for animals as a whole.

ColeywindowDSCN4204

Whatever you decide is fine, this is all Voluntary.   Please Be Kind.

The only thing stopping and inhibiting us, is each of us going it alone.

He gave his life for mine – 1958.  Saving me as a 3 yr old toddler from a rattle snake.  He has been my emotional inspiration all along. I have always remembered asking my Mom where is REX? I remember finally giving up asking. She wouldn’t answer me.  My Dad when I was 45 is the one who told me.  I knew then, why I do what I do.

Do you want to be your own Boss? Do you have a business mind? Do you see yourself as an Entrepreneur? Do you like being Self-Employed? Do you just want to stay at home and work from there to bring in new income?

I can highly recommend – Building a business income using and promoting products that we all use – daily.  Better,  SAFE, GREEN, EFFECTIVE products.  We have been around the block so to speak and the lesson we have learned is that brand “new shiny thing” is not going to stick for most people, you need to be in the “pay stream” of products that people never have a reason to stop using.  When they stop using it, the checks stop too! You need a company that is in control of manufacturing and fullfillment.

Healthy Hooves – Hoof supplements that make strong beautiful dense hooves inside and out.

Your horse too can have healthy dense beautiful hoof material outside and inside. DSC02353

This supplement is great for building and repairing and growing and maintaining healthy strong hooves.  Works great for barefoot horses.

Healthy hooves is about fulfilling nutritional deficiencies to the whole body.  The result is even the hooves are magnificent.

It’s about improved digestion and improved absorption.  This works great for horses who have dry cracked, shelly, hooves, tender, soles, laminitis and founder repair….If your horse doesn’t have strong, healthy looking hooves and healthy soles you need this product.

ABC PLUS or PLUS Fortified alone can provide the HOOVES of your dreams.  Sometimes more is needed if you want it to happen faster, you can use the ABC HOOF for 6 months to a year additional to the PLUS or PLUS Fortified.  You will see so many other benefits as well as healthy hooves.

I have maintained my horses on ABC PLUS for 24 years so far.  And rehabbed as well.  A Thoroughbred at age 12 I took in off the track, came to me with his shoes still on. They said he wasn’t running well.  He took 1st in one race and then 3ird in other’s.  They thought he had bruised feet.

We took his shoes off, put him in a pen with dirt and a dry river bed.  We found he had abcesses under both front feet.  He is a flaxen sorrel, no white feet just light hooves.  They were “shelly” barely could hold the shoes on.

So we packed his feet with Sugardine (white sugar and iodine) put a sanitary pad under to keep the pak in and then duct taped.  We replaced it every other day for a while until he no longer had any abcesses.  He was put on ABC PLUS maintenance dose for life and added in ABC HOOF for 6 months.  The next spring he was running over those river rocks barefoot.  And to this day he is barefoot and strong tough hooves inside and out.  He is 27 now and on 8 oz of ABC PLUS daily to help him maintain his weight in his geriatric years.  He trots, runs, gallops, canters, springs into the air with glee and fun.  Very awesome.

I can highly recommend…if you have HOOF issues, then get on the ABC PLUS or PLUS Fortified and in 30 days you will see new beautiful growth at the cornet band that you will see is the HOOF material you want for the whole hoof.  It takes a year to grow a totally new hoof inside and out.

Get your ABC PLUS or PLUS FORTIFED HERE.  Click the name of the product to read the descriptions.

Equine Stool – Horse Watery Stool, Messy Poopy Behinds “Colitis” – What to do?

DSC01338generalpoopybehindHorses sometimes can develop a “watery discharge” or watery stool, squirts,  and even diarrhea for various reasons.  It can affect any age. But it is more common in older horses.

It’s called Equine Colitis.

It can be a light case, or it can be all over the tail, cheeks and hocks, a daily mess.

I spared ;you the really messy very disconcerting disaster it can look like and be to try and keep cleaned up and still show and use your horse.  If this has happened to you, you already know how much of a mess it can be.

In my experience with my own horses as well as with client’s horses…there are a few possible ways to clear this up with a natural healthy protocol.

First and foremost, you should use one of our “digestive” supplements daily starting at maintenance dose for a few days and increasing up to 6 oz and then 8 oz daily.  I recommend using either the ABC PLUS or ABC PLUS Fortified.

Often times adding this to your horse’s diet daily will clear up the “gut” distress that is going on.  Reducing inflammation, increasing healthy population of friendly gut bacteria and therefore increasing absorption of all nutrients consumed therefore feeding their immune system and therefore improving all their body systems and overall creating optimal health for all age groups.  I have helped several senior horses with just this daily.

Keep the 8 oz dose daily for at least 60 to 90 days for a normal healing period before reducing to 6 oz or 4 oz maintenance dose.  It it reoccurs then you will need to increase back to the 8 oz daily and give them 6 months of healing time before trying to reduce the amount daily again.  If it comes back then stay on the 8 oz daily for life. I always have my seniors on the 8 oz daily for life.

http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=34

If the 8 oz daily of ABC PLUS or FORTIFIED are not arresting the problem, then keeping with this “digestive” supplement we will add the MOP.  This is to MOP up toxins in their system and safely transport the toxins out of their system without creating a “detox” reaction.  Reduce inflammation in the lining of the GI tract. Force feed the MOP for 30 days and then see….if still a problem then keep force feeding the MOP.  This has worked for a young 3 yo that was purchased with a diarrhea issue.  Today his is diarrhea free and maintained on the ABC PLUS Fortified.  Repeat as long as necessary.  Could take a year or so…

http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=44

If the problem is not arrested still when off the MOP then we can move to another protocol that is working for my senior who is 27 in the pic above.  We have found for him putting out the Free Choice Stess System which he eats mainly the A Mix, BVC mix which I replace 1 X per day, the Ts-K Mix which I only replace about 1 X per week, some of the Redmond Salt which I only have to replace about 1 X per month.  Each horse is an individual so each horse has to be given the time and opportunity to get what ever their body tells them it needs.  It took me about 2 1/2 years to finally figure out what will work for him.

http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=56&products_id=814

My 36 yo mare, we found that she was able to maintain perfect poop with the 8 oz daily of ABC PLUS. And her weight maintained awesome along with wet timothy pellets for her hay ration and then my wet feed mix with timothy pellets, flax seed, rice bran mix.  http://myfineequine.com/myfeedmix.htm  She like her son above, would eat A mix and BVC mix all up whenever I would put it out for them.  But she didn’t require it to maintain her perfect poop.

I have found if you have a runny poop issue along with a low grade fever, maybe a degree or 2, and going off their feed, not feeling well, that giving orally our Equine Target Factors which is the benefits of the Liquid Probi along with immune support factor technology from colostrum and fertilized eggs “transfer factors” and much more. 7 days of 1 oz daily or as long as you deem necessary has for me brought them out of it.  There are some weird “bacteria and viruses” out there these days.  http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=40

DSC01779Generalnodischarge

This picture is a clean and dry behind for over 2 months now on the protocol of 8 oz of PLUS daily and free choice minerals A mix, BVC mix, which is mostly what he eats up every day and TsK mix which I have to replace only 1 X per week.  He also has available in the Free Choice Stress System MOP which he doesn’t seem to eat any, maybe a little when first put it out last year, and Rushcreek Mineral which he doesn’t eat any of and the Redmond Salt which I have refilled 2 X’s over the past year.  He also has a free choice white salt block in his stall.

I feed him low carb timothy pellets soaked with whole flax seeds and 1/2 cup added stabilized rice bran (Equine Shine) and 1/2 scoop dry measured alfalfa pellets for some extra protein to help with weight gain which are low NSC’s and from StandLee company where I was told they don’t use Roundup on the alfalfa which is GMO as it isn’t certified organic.  Buy certified organic where you can.  He get’s this mix 2 X’s daily with his 8 oz of ABC Plus Organic digestive supplment split into 2 feedings, along with 6 scoops daily of dry timothy pellets to supplement his grass hay.

The big difference for this horse was adding the free choice stress system minerals.  The addition of them is what has finally turned him around for the better.  No watery discharge, perfect poop and gaining back his healthy weight.

November 2014 – New addition to the story.…Due to my own decision of after 10 years not giving any chemical wormers to any of my horses, I decided after finding 7 tiny round worms in one horse that were shed in a mushy poop 8 days after using Herbal Wormer, I talked with the formulator and she told me that most people chemical worm once every 2 or 3 years and recommended that I do so.

So I did,  everyone did fine out of 9 horses, except for General here who has had a mild case of “colitis” termed by the vet or “watery stool” for the last 3 years that we have managed well, exactly 7 days after the Zimectrin Gold wormer, he wouldn’t eat his dinner and whinned and layed down looking at his tummy.  UGGGGG!

So I gave him, Liquid Probi, Target Factors, Banamine and 2 pints of Mineral Oil.  The next morning I found a “red” road apple formed poop pile.  I talked with my vet, and we decided I would give him some Sulfur Antiob for 7 days.  This helped alot, along with the Probi and Target Factors 2 X daily.  He finally decided to start tentatively eating again about day 5.

We are going on 19 days now since he displayed the discomfort and wouldn’t eat.  He rallied pretty good after the antiob’s. but still has days where he won’t eat right away and kicks at his stomach and lays down.  I give him 1 oz of Target Factors and 1 oz of Probi orally syringed and that clears him up and he has usually ate all or most of his breakfast wet food and is usually slowly eats his dinner wet food. So we are still working on this…..will take time to bring him back to his “robust” eager to eat, energetic self.

Makes me so mad at myself.  Never again will he get a chemical wormer.  I will start him on NOMS once I know he is feeling fine again.  It’s much like my “diverticulitus” which can hurt off and on, can cut your appetite, can even bleed. Here’s hoping my bad decision and experience will help you keep from making it too.

The kicker is after I did the wormer, I only found 3 tiny tiny round worms in that one gelding’s 7 piles of poop the next morning.  I didn’t get time to individually inspect everyone else except that I didn’t “notice” any other dead worms anywhere. So, if you have a horse with issues, don’t chemically worm, without doing a fecal to make sure you need to.  So, I can tell you the natural worming solutions do work.

My favorite is still NOMS.  I never did have any worm issues using it so after a 10 year experiment of using the Herbal Wormer I’m going back to ABC NOMS.  It has a new recommended usuage of to DEWORM 1 scoop 7 days, then 1/2 scoop for 14 days, then none till 2 months later or as indicated by your horse or a fecal.  New pelleted and new dosage formula.

http://myfineequinecart.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=93

You will get your best results always using a “digestive” supplement such as I use the ABC PLUS or PLUS Fortified daily to support a healthy digestive system and improve absorption of all nutrients consumed. Helps to repel parasites.

I have worked with this issue before and we got it corrected on 3 different  horses.  One is mine age 27 gelding.
One was 27 yo retired dressage horse and  other is a much younger horse 3 yo at the time who was purchased with the issue.
Read bottom of page about Kingsley 3 yo here http://www.myfineequine.com/detox.htm
Read bottom of page about Dan the buckskin below Kingsley. http://www.myfineequine.com/equine1.htm

So now Sept 2015, we are 1 year after giving the chemical wormer.  General my 28 yo gelding, lost a bunch of weight, bones sticking up everywhere!  So mad at myself.  He coliced with gut pain every now and then for 6 MONTHS.  Again I’m reminded it takes 5 to 6 months to heal the gut, human or animal either one.  He does very well on the ABC NOMS.  No pain or issues what so ever.  I tried 1 dose of the Parasite Tonic as I did all the others for 30 days.  He ate heartily until about 1/2 way through his wet food mix, and stopped, paused, looked with a weird “whats this?” look on his face, and went and layed down in his shelter.  So I went and got a 1 1/2 oz dose of ABC Liquid PROBI and by the time we were done feeding all the other horses their wet feed he was back up eating again.  Took about 20 minutes or so.  His weight is not back to what it was in the pic above prior to the chem wormer, but he is looking pretty good and filling back out and eating heartily with no colic episodes, and he is running around, bursting into a gallop and feeling really good again.  Thank you God.  I hope to save anyone who reads this from making the same mistakes more than once or not at all.  This pic is spring 2015.  He looks much better now.  I’ll get another pic and load it up, Sept 2015.

It is now Nov 2016, General age 29 has gained all his weight back and some.  He in the last couple of months has not consumed any of the A mix and BVC mix anymore.  For all this year up to end of Sept first of October he was consuming most of 3/4 cup of each, each day, then he stopped.  His poops are great.  He also stopped eating as much food, so have backed off the amount he seems to be willing to consume in a 24 hour period to where daily there is little or none left.   He eats, my homemade mix of timothy pellets soaked with flax seed and some added rice bran, in hot water with applecider vinegar and garlic with his individual supps added.  And his hay ration is orchard grass pellets.  So he has 2 bucket feeders in his stall.

Stall bucket feeders. dsc036812bucketsoffeed

I will load up a new pic as soon as I take one.  It seems he may be having some cushings issues mild laminitis as the weather changed to cold which all signs of went away after about 4 weeks, so have put him on a Homeopathic Heel Cushings spray.  My other 29 yo Thoroughbred Alo, came up lame at the same time so that is what leads me to believe it could be cushings related due to Alo’s low immune issues last year which cleared up by removing his buddy of 15 years and all competition for food and some Micronutrients 2 bottles worth, Liquid Target Factors a bottle worth and 30 day MOP.

Both horses are fed per their individual needs and likes.  Alo still consumes hay where General doesn’t, but gets extra timothy/orchard grass pellets to supplement his hay ration and he gets my wet feed mix also with his individual supps.  All of my horses from 7 to 29 are on ABC PLUS, Selenium/Vit e, NOMS every other month for 3 weeks, then these two oldies are getting ABC Uveitis supplement to help with their eyesight and eyebright herb and IONS to make sure they drink enough water and some Capsicum to aid blood flow to the eyes.  General has developed last November some belly edema again because I tried to feed him soaked alfalfa cubes the way I used to feed his Momma (who never was IR) in order to help him gain weight again (per the pic of him above spring 2015.  I put him on ABC IONS (lower in sodium than the RideRite Electrolytes) helps keep that down, it’s a good idea on older horses you know aren’t likely drinking enough water.  I tried using the Cushings Supplement again on him but I’m not sure it was doing anything, he stopped eating as much food after a couple of months on it so I stopped the supp to see if that was why or not….He seems to be eating well again, but not as much as he was by just about 4 wet scoops a day is all, and as I mentioned his weight is way enough so he doesn’t need to gain anymore anyway.

General 29 yo.  As you can see he has gained all his weight back and some, growing his winter coat.  You can see the little bit of belly edema.  Nov 17, 2016dsc03692generalnov172016

Insidious Effects of Glyphosate on Gut Bacteria

Insidious Effects of Glyphosate on Gut Bacteria
Despite the biotech industry’s never ending hype extoling the safety of glyphosate, more and more evidence is becoming available that shows that glyphosate may be the most important factor in the incidence of many chronic diseases and conditions that have become prevalent in countries that allow the continued use of this toxic product. It is possible that we are only now beginning to realize the harmful effects of this herbicide that has been in common use since the 1970s?
Toxicity studies conducted by the industry are typical short term and fail to consider the effects of continued exposure. While it may be true that acute toxicity of glyphosate is low, long-term exposure is more deadly. By interfering with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, consumption of glyphosate depletes essential amino acids such as tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine, which may cause obesity, depression, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
A study examining the effect of glyphosate on bacteria in the GI tract of poultry found that populations of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Enterococcus) were reduced with low levels of glyphosate. At the same glyphosate level, harmful bacteria such as Salmonella were resistant, escalating an existing Salmonella contamination problem in the poultry product industry. Similar studies in cattle indicated that glyphosate residues on cattle feed may predispose cattle to infection by Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism.
Increased use of glyphosate increases the level of contamination of glyphosate in food for humans and livestock. The response of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to this problem is to increase the tolerance levels for glyphosate allowed in food and feed.

Gut-Wrenching: New Studies Reveal the Insidious Effects of Glyphosate

From The Cornucopia Institute, March 26th, 2014, By Pamela Coleman, PhD – Farm and Food Policy Analyst, The Cornucopia Institute

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in one of the most heavily used herbicide in the world: Monsanto’s Roundup®. The industry claims that Roundup® is quite safe, but authors of a recent article in the scientific journal Entropy reach a very different conclusion:

“Contrary to the current widely-held misconception that glyphosate is relatively harmless to humans, the available evidence shows that glyphosate may rather be the most important factor in the development of multiple chronic diseases and conditions that have become prevalent in Westernized societies.”[i] [emphasis added]

This is a bold assertion. Is it possible that we are only now realizing the harmful effects of this herbicide that has been in common use since the 1970s? How does glyphosate harm humans? How did we overlook these problems for decades? Read on.

Acute vs. Chronic Toxicity

The acute toxicity of glyphosate is relatively low, meaning that accidentally ingesting it will likely not cause immediate harm. Chronic toxicity—the effects of continually ingesting glyphosate residues in food—is cause for concern. Glyphosate interferes with fundamental biochemical reactions and may predispose humans to obesity, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other health problems.

It’s easy to overlook these effects. Toxicity studies on laboratory animals are typically short term, often only a few months. The harm from low-level, chronic exposure can only be seen after a long period of time, often years, or even decades. The real guinea pigs in this case are humans.

From a scientific perspective, it is impossible to prove that a chemical ingested on food can harm a person’s health decades later. However, it is possible to study the specific biochemical action of the pesticide, and then examine the diseases that have been related to malfunction of that biochemical pathway.

Indirect Evidence of Harm: Glyphosate Interferes with Biochemistry of Bacteria

Describing the effects of glyphosate, the Entropy article states: “Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time.”[ii] The authors cite several ways glyphosate may contribute to the chronic diseases that have occurred with increasing frequency as use of the herbicide has increased.

Roundup® kills plants by interfering with a biochemical pathway involved with synthesis of amino acids, called the shikimate pathway. This pathway is not found in humans, therefore it was assumed that glyphosate does not harm humans. The pathway is found in bacteria, however, and humans depend on bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to synthesize the essential amino acids.

By interfering with the biochemistry of bacteria in our GI tract, consumption of glyphosate depletes essential amino acids and predisposes humans to a host of chronic health problems. Specifically, glyphosate depletes the amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine, which can then contribute to obesity, depression, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

There is also evidence that Roundup® inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in plants[iii] and mammals[iv]. The CYP enzymes help to detoxify foreign chemicals (such as pesticides), regulate levels of vitamin D, and control cholesterol in humans.

The combination of ingredients in Roundup® may be even more toxic than glyphosate alone.[v] The surfactants in Roundup® make it an effective herbicide, but also increase its toxicity to animal cells[vi] and bacteria[vii].

Direct Evidence of Harm: Glyphosate Kills Beneficial Bacteria

A study examining the effect of glyphosate on bacteria that grow in the GI tract of chickens found that beneficial bacteria were susceptible, and harmful bacteria were resistant, to glyphosate. The growth of four types of beneficial bacteria—Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Enterococcus—was reduced at low concentrations of glyphosate. [viii] The same types of beneficial bacteria inhabit the human GI tract, and they are sold over the counter as a probiotic supplement. Some strains are also found in yogurt.

When exposed to the same levels of glyphosate that harmed the beneficial bacteria, several harmful bacteria, including Salmonella, grew successfully. The authors concluded that ingestion of glyphosate can disturb the normal microbial community and predispose chickens to carrying high levels of Salmonella or other harmful bacteria.

A similar study found that glyphosate was toxic to beneficial bacteria in cattle, and hypothesized that glyphosate residues on cattle feed may predispose cattle to infection by Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium that causes botulism.[ix]

Roundup Use Skyrocketing

When Roundup® was first introduced in the 1970s, its use was limited to weeds, because the active ingredient glyphosate kills all plants. That changed with the introduction of crops genetically engineered (GE) to tolerate glyphosate. Glyphosate use has been increasing exponentially. From 2001 to 2007, glyphosate use doubled, reaching 180 to 185 million pounds in the U.S. in 2007.[x] One reason for the increase in herbicide use is the increase in corn acreage to produce the ethanol that is added to gasoline.

Herbicide use is also increasing on crops grown for food. First, glyphosate can now be sprayed over the GE crop itself, whereas previously only the weeds were sprayed. Second, herbicides are now sprayed on crops to kill the foliage just before harvest, particularly potatoes, beans, and grains. These practices increase not only the amount of herbicide sprayed into the environment, but also the amount directly absorbed by the plants that are eaten by humans and livestock.

In response to this scenario, the agrichemical industry requested increases in the tolerance levels for glyphosate, that is, the residues allowed in food and feed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) complied, raising the tolerance levels of glyphosate residue in many crops. For example, the levels for soybean have been doubled, from 20 parts per million (ppm) to 40 ppm.[xi]

This means that the genetically engineered Roundup Ready® crops will have higher levels of glyphosate, even as scientists learn more about the insidious long-term effects of ingesting it.

Conclusion

This article highlights only a few of the scientific studies that show how glyphosate interferes with fundamental biochemical reactions and inhibits the growth of beneficial bacteria. As glyphosate use increases, there is increasing urgency for additional studies to determine the effects of glyphosate consumption over a human life span.

Glyphosate Feeds Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

Tuesday, January 6, 2015 A peer-reviewed study recently published in the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology titled, “Influence of glyphosate in planktonic and biofilm growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa,” indicates that the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate) may be contributing to the enhanced growth of the P. aeruginosa. This pathogenic bacteria has great medical significance and is commonly found in watercourses and reservoirs in both aerobic and anaerobic forms, and can be a source of waterborne infection.

The new study indicates that both the aerobic and anaerobic strains of this bacteria can thrive when exposed to varying concentrations of glyphosate. Also noted was the increased ability of glyphosate to support the growth of so-called biofilms, a closely adhering colony of bacteria embedded in a self-produced matrix of a “slimy” nature. Biofilm colonies are far more virulent and exhibit the kind of antibiotic resistance found in serious infections in humans, such as skin infections and pulmonary complications associated with fatal conditions such as cystic fibrosis.
Previous studies have shown that Roundup herbicide not only destroys beneficial soil bacteria but alsoshifts the gut bacteria of animals towards pathogenic strains of bacteria, including the deadly botulism-associated Clostridium botulinum strain.
As the ubiquitous Roundup continues to accumulate in larger amounts in the environment, there is a growing concern that it may be upsetting the natural microbial balance upon which our own microbial health depends.

EQUINE ULCERS – Prevention and Treatment – How to Diagnose

Here is the best video I’ve seen on How to Detect if your Horse has Ulcers.

Equine ulcers are ulcers that form in horses. Ulcers are breaks or holes in the lining of the stomach or intestines. A horse’s stomach has upper and lower sections. The upper section does not have glands that secrete acid and is not designed to be exposed to excessive amounts of acid. Ulcers often form in this area when acid builds up in the lower part of the stomach. Here are some symptoms to look for if you suspect equine ulcers.

  1. Colic

    • Colic is a term used to describe pain in the abdomen. Severe colic can cause a horse to act violently. Milder symptoms can include the horse standing up and laying down frequently or just laying down more often. The horse may also stand stretched out or even stand like it is going to urinate without actually urinating. The horse may do a lot of rolling. It might turn its head toward its flank or repeatedly curl its upper lip. It also could paw at the ground a lot.

    Diarrhea

    • Frequent or extended diarrhea can be a cause of equine ulcers as well as a symptom, but either way diarrhea should be a concern. It is important to make sure there is nothing in the horse’s feed or anywhere else in its environment that could cause diarrhea so that a proper diagnosis can be done.

    Temperament

    • Any changes in the horse’s normal temperament should be a cause for concern. The most common symptoms for equine ulcers that are reflected in the horse’s temperament include irritability or sourness, dullness, and reluctance to work.

    Body Condition

    • Poor body condition is also a symptom of equine ulcers. This can include loss of weight or poor performance, especially for a racehorse. A loss of appetite caused by abdominal pain can lead to the weight loss. Even the condition of the horse’s coat can be a clue that it is not feeling well.

    Foals

    • Foals also can suffer from ulcers. They will have similar symptoms as horses. Other symptoms to look for can include sucking half-heartedly when nursing, grinding their teeth, and frequently chewing on straw.

Equine Ulcers: Are They Causing
Your Horse Problems?

Don’t think you have to worry about equine ulcers? Does your horse suffer from any of the following??

  • Chronic colic
  • Poor body condition
  • Loss of or poor appetite, especially when grain is involved
  • Poor performance
  • Bad attitude while being handled and/or ridden
  • Generally ill tempered
  • Continually fluctuating body weight
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Excessive spookyness
  • Drawn up belly and sides
  • Unexplained weight-loss
  • Tight lips and jaw
  • cribbing
  • allergies are symptoms of leaky gut syndrome

If so, your horse could be suffering from Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, the official term for equine ulcers. This is a very common problem in horses, much more prevalent than many owners realize.

Some reports show as many as 85% of pleasure horses suffer from this problem. Rates for horses with stressful lives, such as show horses or race horses have been reported to have rates higher than 95%.

Ages of Horses Affected

Equine ulcers can affect any age of horse, from newborn foal to geriatric animals. Thankfully, they can be treated by various methods, and management practices can be altered to help prevent them.

Young Foals

The condition in very young foals is known as neonatal gastric ulceration. It is usually accompanied by another severe illness, such as generalized sepsis.

Suckling Foals

In suckling foals, the condition is known as gastroduodenal ulcer disease. This form of ulcers is characterized by ulcer in the upper digestive tract — usually the lower esophagus, stomach, or upper part of the small intestine.

The cause is unknown, but researchers suspect the problem starts with inflammation in the small intestine. This inflammation causes a back-up of acidic digesta, which then causes ulcers in the stomach and lower esophagus.

It is suspected that a viral or bacterial disease causes the initial problems that lead to equine ulcers in these foals.

Mature Horses

The main form of equine ulcers to affect mature horses is erosion or ulceration of the squamous mucosa.

This means the protective mucous layer of the stomach and digestive tract breaks down and can no longer protect the underlying tissue from the acidic environment. When the underlying tissue is exposed to the acid, the acid eats away at it, much like happens to our skin when we spill acid on it.

Risk Factors

A number of risk factors can predispose a horse to equine ulcers. The most obvious is a stressful lifestyle such as that of a show or race horse. Other factors include housing situations, feeding situations, and temperament of the animal.

Intense Exercise

Intense exercise has been shown to play a major role in the formation of ulcers.

One study of Thoroughbred racehorses showed an ulcer prevalence of 100% in horses actively racing. Horses in race training weren’t much better off, as the prevalence in that group was 91%.

A study of endurance horses showed that they had an ulcer prevalence of 67% after races.

The current speculation is that tightened abdominal muscles caused by intense exercise cause acidic digesta to back up into the upper digestive tract and remain there longer than usual.

Electrolyte administration

Surprisingly, it has been found that routine administration of electrolytes, such as is done for endurance horses during races, can cause the formation of equine ulcers.

In a study of 14 horses, those that received 8 hourly doses of commercial electrolytes showed a higher number of ulcers compared to the control group. The horses that received electrolytes also had more severe ulcers than the control group.

Confinement Housing

Confinement housing, particularly in a stall, is another risk factor for developing ulcers. Horses with no prior ulcer history who were moved from a pasture situation to stall confinement showed ulcers after only 7 days!

It has been suggested that these types of housing situations cause ulcers due to:

  • Lack of socialization with other horses
  • Changes in diet composition
  • Decreased meal frequency
  • Decreased grazing time

Temperament of Animal

Temperament is also thought to play some role in ulcer formation, though it is not clear exactly how big of a role it may play.

Nervous horses have been proven to have a higher prevalence of ulcers than their more calm counterparts.

Though we are not sure of the exact reason nervous horses are more prone to ulcers, it is currently suspected that this higher frequency might be caused by the body being under continual stress.

Meal Composition

Meal composition is thought to play a role in equine ulcer formation because of how it affects saliva production.

When a hay meal is fed to a horse, more chewing is required, and therefore more saliva (which is an important buffer for the digestive tract) is produced. If an equal weight of grain replaced the hay meal, only half the amount of saliva would be produced.

Saliva is also more continually passed into the digestive tract with a hay meal, since it takes the horse longer to eat the hay meal than the grain meal. This makes a more stable lower digestive tract, because the acidity of the tract is not able to drop dramatically.

Meal Size

Meal size also plays a role in ulcer formation. Large grain meals produce more acid than an equal weight of hay (and less saliva as mentioned above!). The large grain meal will also empty from the stomach more slowly than small grain meals or hay.

So not only have we created more acid, we’ve also created a situation where it sits in the stomach for a longer period of time. This is practically screaming to ulcers to make themselves at home…

Meal Frequency

Related to both of the above risk factors, meal frequency also plays a role in ulcer formation.

Horses are one of the few animals that constantly produce gastric acid whether or not there is feed in their stomach. This should not be surprising, since they evolved as animals that continually grazed.

Since there is always acid being produced, if there is not a buffer (like saliva!) from eating many times a day, the acidity in the tract will increase. The longer a horse goes without any food in front of him, the more acidic his digestive tract becomes. Like we’ve mentioned before, this is practically screaming at ulcers to make themselves at home…

The all too common practice of feeding horses twice daily has been shown to be a contributing factor to ulcers. The best way to prevent this problem is to provide enough forage in those two feedings that the horse goes very little time without forage between meals.

Prevention and Treatment of Equine Ulcers

Eliminating as many risk factors as possible from your horse’s life is the best way to prevent ulcers. Obviously, some factors, such as frequent showing or racing cannot be changed. However, other factors such as meal composition and frequency can be changed with small changes to management practices.

If you suspect that your horse has ulcers, there are a few things that can be done.

Some owners choose to have their vet scope the animal to check for ulcers before treatment. However, others choose to just assume the horse has ulcers because of the cost of scoping, as well as the fact that the procedure often misses ulcers lower in the tract, where most ulcers are actually located.

Horses will usually show a great improvement within a few weeks of treatment being started, except in the most severe cases.

Change of Management Practices

Changing management practices is often the easiest and most cost-effective way to not only prevent ulcers, but to treat them as well.

Reducing the acid level in the digestive tract by providing continual forage often goes a long way towards treatment of mild cases of ulcers. Removal of high starch meals (or decreased size and increased frequency) also helps to reduce the acidity.

Commercial Products

Changing management practices may not be enough to take care of more severe cases of ulcers. In these cases, commercial ulcer products are often very helpful in protecting the digestive tract long enough for it to heal.

However, its important to note that management changes will need to be made to minimize the risk of the ulcers returning.

Our holistic natural nutritional approach to preventing as well as healing equine ulcers is to feed a daily digestive supplement.  Very important for fiber digestion, healing and keeping healthy the equine gut lining, flourishing friendly bacteria, improving absorption of nutrients consumed up to 300% of normal for any one individual per their norm no matter the age.  You will know this is working based on the softness in the eye you see happening, calmer horse, plenty of performance energy and interest, a beautiful silky glowing hair coat, all this is due to a well balanced immune system and endocrine (hormones) system.  Better absorption of B vitamins and all other nutrients.
